Last Saturday I popped down to London for a day of mini sessions near Hammersmith. Three families, in four hours, in a park I’d never been to, a part of London I’d never been to, and families I knew but had never met! To say I was nervous would be an understatement.
But the ladies were awesome. They gave me bumpkin-proof instructions to navigate the underground, they were all helpful with their kids during the sessions and we had such a good time. It was a proper little adventure for me, as I usually stick to photographing families around Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, and rely on my car to get from A to B. But if I learnt anything from these sessions it’s that you either go all in, or don’t do it at all.
The sessions went so smoothly because we’d talked so much in the lead up to the day, and we were all on the same page. All the kids are under two, which can be a tricky age to photograph well as toddlers aren’t exactly known for their ability to sit nicely and pose for photos. So we didn’t even try to do any poses. I photographed all the kids running around, playing, climbing, kicking through leaves. This approach works so well for this age, and results in lovely photos that I hope the families will look back on with joy for years to come.
